Season 1989-90
Season 1989/90

Rushden Park FC
Sunday Reserves
Ferreting around in the loft recently, I came across a gnarled little
notebook bearing the legend.....
"Rushden Park Reserves
Season 1989-90
Rushden Northwell Sunday League"
Instantly, I was transported back to the days of ringing round on a Thursday night, and dragging people out
of their beds on a cold Sunday morning. Marvellous.
I initially joined "Park" as something to do after breaking up
with a girlfiend. I heard the unmistakable shouts of men playing football on the wind. "Yes," I thought, "It must be down
Spencer Park." So headed down there forthwith. Behold, I saw an old mate, Mark Johnson, playing and after the game asked if
I could join. He invited me to midweek training and that was that.
I had n`t played for about 15 years, and was n`t
particularly good, which was probably evident, but I came training regularly and eventually made the bench, and my stint as
"Lino" taught me a lot about positioning . The goal-scoring machine that was Paul Smith ran the side, and after a while we
would pick the team together with "Mr Rushden Park" - Brian Duff, over a few jars at the Viking. Eventually, I became the
manager, which was ok, because I could sneak on for the last 15 minutes as sub. Hee Hee. When we were really desperate, I
started !!!
Rushden Park Sunday Reserves was the sort of team where things were not taken too seriously, as it was
in the First Team now run by Paul "Smitty" Smith. Working closely, we picked our sides according to the needs of the first
team. Consequently, we had special guest appearances from First teamers , coming back from injury, or loss of form. So the
team sheet occasionally had people like Andy Rollins , Tony Jupp, Dick Thorneycroft, Greg Hayden, and Phil Berrill. In one
game , Phil played in midfield , and so dominated the game that , and because of his appearance, I re-named him "Rummenigge"
after the German midfield general, Karl-Heinz. It was an outstanding performance.
The Sunday Reserves had
an amazing age range throughout the squad. Veterans like Dave Paradise and his son Lee were known to be on the odd team-sheet,
as were Archie Devlin and his son Jim. Archie took us for training, and was quite a task- master. It must have worked, because
I found myself at a good level of fitness fairly quickly. He had us doing murderous shuttles and would urge us on with his
trademark saying " Draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiyvvve it!!!" in a broad Scottish accent. Youth was represented by Tim Daltrey. A tall
gangly- looking lad hiding under a mop of fair hair, he was quick, and although starting at the back initially, as the season
wore on, he played up top to devastating effect. The book shows a haul of 9 goals for that season, and the leading scorer.
Carl Truett, affectionately known as "Spike" for his spikey black hair, (hey we`re footballers, not philosophers). He was
tall, leggy and very quick. Very useful at the back to cover for those of us who could n`t get back in time!. Fearless in
the tackle, well, crazy really. The midfield for the first game of the season consisted of SRJFCs Mark Brawn, Dave Stretch,
Wymington`s finest Tony Shipton, and the young stripling , Neil Coe. That`s a classy midfield, hell, and this was supposedly
the reserves !! Tony was stocky, and quick, very skilful, managing five goals that season. Neil represented the youth wing
of the squad, quietly spoken, he was good to watch on the ball. Had a penchant for wearing very short shorts, a la Neil Webb.
Up front, Glen Manning, and Patrick Swayzee look-alike Neil Wilshire. Neil was a class act wherever he played, whether at
centre-forward or centre-half, and probably would have scored more than the five if he`d been exclusively up front.
Judging
by the book, Smitty handed over the reins after two games and my first game in charge was against Finedon Tudor. We had Park
stalwart Pat Smith in goal. Ostensibly a midfielder and of diminutive stature, he nontheless would acquit himself well when
asked to play in goal, so much so that he was known as Pat "The Cat" Smith. Not so clever this day though, as we lost 4-2.
I remember playing for the Saturday Reserves over at Doddington once. There must have been some sort of injury crisis, one,
because I was starting, and two we were pretty abysmal. I remember a howling wind and very sloping pitch and Pat in exasperation
shouting at the top of his voice "We`re the ones in Yellow!!!! " Also in the Tudors game, we had Bob Foster, thus named
after the American Heavyweight boxer, but his real name was Steve. He`d played at a good level previously, and I envisaged
him as a sort of Molby-esque figure in midfield, and indeed there was some classy touches, but ultimately the game passed
him by a bit, which he graciously acknowledged. Brawny swept behind the Hippo. And we had Kev York up front and gave Pete
Mayes and Ian Bayes a run out. I noted that we had a lack of commitment and fitness at the bottom of the page.
It
all came good against Colworth Res the next week, Brawny swept behind Pete Mayes and the midfield quartet mixed youth and
experience, pace and steel. Stretch, Daltry, Paradise, Coe, feeding "Funky Tone" Shipton and Rob Paice up front . We won 5-1
with Tony getting a brace. Ah, Rob Paice. Pacey by name pacey by nature. He was a likeable scouser with a touch of the Yossers
about him e.g. "I`ll play, I can do that, I`ll score loads" Generally, you`d take a pinch of salt, but he was pretty good.
Very quick off the mark. He scored in this game and managed five for the season. He lodged in a house `round the corner from
me, and was n`t always available or contactable, and there was always the air that he might disappear at any moment.
We
used a number of keepers that season, The Cat, Spencer Park`s Parky Martin Stevens, and even Spike against Irchester Cottage,
but we settled on Mick Solo for most of the season. He was known as Solo because we could n`t be bothered to pronounce Solonski
properly. He lived `round Shelley Rd in Wellingborough, and there were a couple of times I had to get him out of bed. Good
shot-stopperthough.
In the game at Earls Barton Stags, we introduced Big Jim Griffiths at centre-half and another
lippy striker in Ian "Northy" Northover up front with Paicey. The defenders must have been deafened into submission, as the
two strikers scored a goal apiece in a 2-2 draw.
Our interest in the cup ended early that year with a 5-2 defeat at
Dunhill in a radically altered team, with Kev York and Tony Shipton up front. It was however, an opportunity to blood two
new youngsters, the two Jasons, Morris and Thornham. It also marked a rare goal from Mark Johnson. The ball came to him on
about the half-way line and he gave it a trademark hoof into the sky. He was already walking back into our defence, thinking
nothing would come of it , only to be met with the congratulations of his disbelieving team-mates. We feared that the ball
would return to earth with snow on it, such was the height of the hoof, but it dipped and dropped behind the keeper, just
under the bar and into the net.
The next couple of games have someone else`s scrawl in the book, so I was away somewhere
at the time, Meanwhile, Tony Jupp got a run out in midfield, an we were introduced to the moustachioed Brendan Reilly in midfield.
Also, Ian Barton. They also played in the 2-0 win against Oakley Arms with Paice and Daltrey up front.
Against the
unbeaten Raunds Woodbine away, we had a bit of an injury crisis, as the defence consisted of Jim Griffiths, Bob Belton in
the middle, and me and Dave Clarke as the full-backs. We had a particularly torrid time. I remember that I got caught constantly
by a ball played behind me, between myself and the centre-half, to the winger who would invariably cross to devastating effect.
There were a few of us playing out of position that day, we lost 7-1. I at least learned a valuable lesson. Full back is a
bit of a specialist position, so you need an experienced specialist there, although you can learn in time. In the following
games I played in the centre of midfield, out of the way where I could n`t do much damage, in a bit of a Makalele role, and
we won !!! I could console myself with the fact that when we played Woodbine again in February at home with the regular defence,
we lost 5-1.
After a good start, the heavy pitches of winter kicked in, and injuries to key members of the team tended
to unsettle us.
John Gadd, the Flying Hippo, departed after a while and we re-jigged the back four. The ever dependable
full backs Dave Paradise and Mark (Get it ***sorted) Johnson began to pick up injuries, or Dave was called upon to show great
versatility in filling in for other colleagues at centre-half or midfield. Hell, even I started at left back for a couple
of games, even once in midfield ! Against Windmill , Mick Solo played up front.!
Two good things to come out of the
injuries were the establishment of a permanent centre back and a new right-back. Step forward Jim Griffiths and Mark Wilson.
Jim was the archetypal centre-half, tall, solid, good in the air, imposing. Jim`s major passion was his cricket, indeed he
had previously played for Northants CCC and was something of a demon with a ball in his hand. I was treated to a Jim death
stare when I did n`t flag for an offside, as he saw it, from which the opposition scored. Scary stuff. Six foot whatever,
fifteen stone, `tache bristling away like a fox`s brush. It must have been the same sort of stare umpires got used to. Had
I temporarily gone insane? I stuck to my guns though, saying that I flagged it as I saw it, and we`d swap if he did n`t like
it. It was only when the opposition manager came over an congratulated me on being sporting and fair when most people would
have flagged such a marginal decision, that I began to wonder if Jim was right !! There was another time when we were playing
at Crow Hill, and we were particularly deplorable and started bickering away at each in the shed sized dressing room. I`m
afraid that I had to shout at the guys, and remind them that the opposition could hear everything we were saying, and would
probably be rolling about the floor laughing, if there had been the room. To his credit, Jim backed me up, and showed that
even if he did n`t sometime agree with me, he had the professionalism to defer to the team manager, even if he was the more
experienced sportsman. Top bloke.
Mark Wilson, everything you wanted a full back to be, solid, dependable, quick of
foot and hard of tackle. Imagine 80s popstar Rick Astley , and you`d have Mark to a tee. Really likeable bloke. Inspired confidence
in the team.
I note from the yellowing pages that Mark Brawn spent most of the time in midfield , but I also remember
him playing a role as sweeper to great effect. He`d sit in behind the back four, sometimes three, and his vision, experience
and speed would carry him off to deal with whatever dangers lurked in our third of the pitch. Class. Mark weighed in with
a respectable 7 goals for the season including a hat-trick against Woodford Stars.
Frank Lampard eat your heart out!
By March, we had a game against Booker, where we were really struggling for a team.
Despite Solo in goal and
Wilson and Paradise in the back four, we had to use Martin Stevens and newbie Richard Compton to augment the defence. Get
this for a midfield;Chris Dix, Glenn Manning, me, and Jason Morris. Jeez. Needless to say, we won 5-0, with Dixie and Morris
scoring, and Compton scoring a brace from the back, with his centre partner Dave Paradise getting a penalty.
The sacred
book does n`t reveal how the season ended, although I think we finished around mid table. Under 9 Trojan Jack Lake`s dad Tim
played occasionally, as did Under 8 Shark Nathan Patrick`s dad Vin, although this might have been the following season.
Our
opponents for the season were: Ambrook Reserves, Rushden Windmill, Earls Barton Stags, Raunds Woodbine, Finedon Tudors, Valleybrook
Reserves, Rushden Oakley Stars,
Colworth Reserves, Wellingborough Links,(for whom SRJFCs Dave Cockings played) Woodford
Stars, and Little Irchester Cottage.
A role-call of those who pulled on the yellow shirts of a Sunday morning
include
Pat Smith, Mark Wilson, John Gadd, Steve Foster, Kevin York,
Ian Bayes, Daryl Chambers, Rob Paice,
Jim Griffiths, Glen Manning, Tony Jupp,
Brendan Reilly, Mick Solonski, Greg Hayden, Ian Barton, Jason Thornham, Bob
Belton,
Martin Stevens, Dave Paradise, Tim Daltry, Pete Mayes, Carl Truet, Mark Brawn,
Dave Stretch, Tony
Shipton, Neil Coe, Neil Wilshere, Glenn Manning, Dave Clarke,
Chris Dix, Mark Johnson, Ian Northover, Gary Ward, Colin
and Mark Hoyland,
Jason Morris, Dave Lee and Andy Rollins.
I met up recently with another Park stalwart,
Dave Clarke, recently. He played a great deal on Saturdays, but turned out for us a number of times. A mad keen Everton fan,
he modelled himself on the Everton "Dogs of War" midfield from their Championship winning team. He adored Kevin Sheedy. Being
a Heavy Metal fan, he sported a shoulder-length mullett, tatts, and the kind of grey pallor a heavy smoker/drinker would have.
I often recall Dave and Mark Johnson lighting up a fag each during half-time, not really listening to tactics or anything,
mainly because nothing could be heard above Dave`s ritual hacking cough. I think he had asthma, so it was n`t a really healthy
lifestyle for him. Socks rolled down, sometime without pads, Dave gave it his all, sometimes to the risk of bodily harm. Luckily,
the mullet has gone, replaced by spiky grey hair, and his cheeks now have a healthy colour to them. He looks well, mainly
because he`s given up the rock n roll lifestyle.
It was a very enjoyable time, and I would n`t have missed it
for the world.
Just recently, Mr "Rushden Park" Brian Duff contacted me and did some copies of photos of Park teams of yesteryear,
so they`ll be going on the site soon. I also took some of the old Park kits from him, some of them are real museum pieces.
