Rushden`s sporting heritage, particularly football, is sadly under-represented on the net, yet for a large proportion
of the male population of the town, playing local football is a shared and common experience. It is a place where we meet and
form life-long aquaintances and friendships which continue to this day.
In my capacity as Managing Director of a junior
football club,South Rushden JFC CIC Ltd, I am now meeting the sons of people I played with and against for Rushden Park FC,
which is very gratifying. Football can play such an important part as the glue which holds all generations of a community
together, and hopefully at South Rushden, we can continue to do that.
As someone with an interest in social
and local history, as well as football, it seemed to me to be a good idea to combine it all in a site about Rushden local
amateur football. They always say, "Write about what you know", so initially, this site is about Rushden Park FC, for whom
I played and managed a Sunday Reserves side in the late Eighties.
In addition to my own records from the 1989/90 season, I`ve been granted custodianship of the results
sheets for Rushden Park FC for the seasons 1954/5 to 1957/8. These were held by the secretary / manager of the time, Dave
Rice, who seems to have played as well when needed. Sadly he passed away on May 18 2005, and luckily his wife, Karon, managed
to find the books and pass them on to me, for which I`m very grateful.
I have a personal reason for wanting these
as my own father,Malcolm Chambers, played from Sep 1956 to Feb 1957, managing to score 15 goals in 20 games, and becoming the
club`s top scorer in the process. Well done Dad.
I would be grateful for any RPFC information or anecdotes that anyone
may have, how the club started, why it finished, absolutely anything at all, and it`ll all go on this site.
Being
a taxi service to my two teenagers and running a junior football club, means that it`ll take time to get the project completed,
but I`ll do my best. I owe it to all the ex-players, to whom I respectfully dedicate this project and site.
Visit often.
Best Wishes & Many Thanks
Daryl Chambers
